My Birthday List for this year

So my birthday is next Friday. and I’ve got a few big things that I want. I’ve gotten my big birthday present already (a giant gas grill :) ), but if I don’t make a list of what I like then it won’t be a goal for me. So here are five big gifts that I want to have. Also these are like BHAG, (big, hairy, audacious gifts) that will take some time for me to make happen.

  1. Canon EOS 7D kit I want this Canon 7D because, I am looking for a DSLR that has video capability and Chris Brank has totally sold me on this camera.
  2. Apple iPad 2 - We have a few iPads in our Preteen Ministry . They are an incredible tool and with Lion coming out, they are going to be more and more useful.
  3. Macbook Pro My wife has been wanting this for awhile and I really want her to have one. The 13″ would be perfect for her and our home :)
  4. 37-Inch Full HD 1080P LED LCD HDTV with VIA Internet Application - we are looking for another tv for our home. I really love vizio and this would be perfect :)
  5. Amazon wish list I have another larger one here too: Big Wish List I love reading and books. I can always use more books :)
Anyway I post these for me and you, what is that one thing that you are working on acquiring? That Macbook Pro is the number one thing on my mind right now, what about you?

Teenagers and bible study

When it comes to your tween and the youth, you want them to study the bible. One thing that I always struggle with when it comes to students is the balance between knowledge and connection with Jesus. I often wonder what is it like for a teenager when it comes to bible study. When do they feel like they should read their bible? What do they read? Why do they read it? I believe if we can answer some of these questions then we can begin to present some compelling illustration to youth about reading God’s word.

What I learned:

A small group leader asked their teenagers when do they read the bible. Most of them said when they felt bad. They look to God’s word for encouragement and strength in times that they are feeling guilty, hurt, or alone. All of these are compelling reasons and I was excited to hear about youth that were going to God’s word when they felt a need. But it made me wonder, how do you compel students to go to God’s word before hurt, pain, or sin? How do you encourage them to draw close to Jesus, before they go through struggles.

Is it true that we all go to the bible when we hurt? I know in my life, my most intense worship and connection with Jesus, has happened in the midst of struggle. These students know that Christ is with them in their time of pain and struggle.

But….

Are we teaching God’s word in a way that students understand it’s impact on a daily, weekly, monthly basis? Are we modeling for our students a consistent connection with Christ? Are we consistently in God’s word?

About a week ago, J-Pat, my boss and our Student Pastor, showed me a DVD of David Platt, author of Radical: Taking Back Your Faith from the American Dream(affiliate link), going completely through Psalm 119. It was quite a feat and a statement. But what was amazing to me wasn’t so much DP and his massive memorization skills, it was instead the passion with which the writer spoke about the word of God. Here’s a sample from that text:

Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes;
and I will keep it to the end.
Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
and observe it with my whole heart.
Lead me in the path of your commandments,
for I delight in it.
Incline my heart to your testimonies,
and not to selfish gain!
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
and give me life in your ways.
Confirm to your servant your promise,
that you may be feared.
Turn away the reproach that I dread,
for your rules are good.
Behold, I long for your precepts;
in your righteousness give me life!
(Psalm 119:33-40 ESV)

I was instantly convicted by the words, not from the mouth of an incredible bible teacher, but instead the words of the author expressing the need of the precepts of God the Father in his life.

Challenge:

Teach God’s word with conviction. Preach a Savior who willingly gave Himself as a sacrifice for an unworthy world, because of His great love for His Father and His brothers and sisters. I pray that in my life I would teach and know God’s word in a way that challenges others to know Christ more through His teaching.

In what ways can we teach our students about God’s word in a way that they fall in love with it and thirst for it?

Netflix raises prices and how to communicate changes

So today Netflix announced changes to its plans and pricing structures. I’m a Netflix customer and was really interested in what all the chaos was about on twitter. I know that this space is dedicated as a ministry space and I totally understand your confusion. I wanted to take a few things from the changes and see if you agree with some of the things that I pull from this and apply to ministry: Continue Reading…

Volunteer Training for Ministry

BLOG UPDATE!!!

blog update

So it’s been so long since I’ve been on a regular schedule. It’s been a blast though. Couple things to be thinking, praying, and looking forward to in the next few weeks here at jcisonline.com

  • We, Student Ministry, will be owning the main service this Sunday. Worship, Greeting, Message, etc. Can’t wait. It’s going to be huge for our church and our Student Ministry.
  • Pulled off another incredible Adventure Week. This year instead of production, I was in charge of figuring out a way to make it awesome for our tweens. It was awesome. Can’t wait to tell you about it. Got a series brewing.
  • Recruiting, Coming up with Training Plans, Camp planning, and just everything that you normally do during the summer in Youth Ministry. It’s going great and I’m realizing just how much help I need running a ministry. It’s crazy!!!

So it’s been awesome. Over the past few weeks I’ve: read a fiction book (haven’t done that in years), played Portal 2 all the way through and crushed it with a buddy of mine, and watched an entire Cubs game!!!

Also I’ve been reminded of my need to have a hobby outside of ministry and I agree. I need something besides working on my lawn. So here are some ideas that I’ve got, but I want to know what you do apart from your ministry and family life. Here are some things I’ve thought about in the past few days:

  • learn how to play guitar ( don’t know how, but I would love to)
  • read a good fictional book series. (I’m reading through Hunger Games right now)
  • Invest some more time into photography. (Haven’t done it in awhile. Really want to upgrade my dslr to one with video capability)

So how’s your summer and what are some things you do besides ministry and family?

Some changes coming to Student Ministry at Brookwood Church

I’m honored to be a part of such an incredible team. After months of praying and seeking the face of God. We believe he has given us a new direction for the Students of Brookwood Church. It’s time to crank it up! Can’t wait for Axis and Crave to begin and for Switch to kick it up a notch!! Gonna be a great year!!

Update: Totally didn’t give props to our boy Chris Brank who cranked this out. You can check out his work here and here. Chris is our Student Worship and Production Director. He’s incredible.

I’m Going back to School

Schooling Bus fore

So it’s almost totally official. But after thinking about this every year since I graduated from the University of Memphis. I am finally going back to school. I will be pursuing an M. Div degree from Liberty’s online seminary.

I’m so pumped and afraid, because it’s not like we can necessarily afford some more debt after the house we just bought and my wife’s car…. So please join us in praying for some money for school. I honestly thought of starting some sort of fundraising thing through the blog, but I thought it would be a little cheesy. But I’ve also had some people tell me that you don’t have because you don’t ask. So maybe later…. Anyway I really do ask that you pray for some funding to come in and that it will ease the financial burden on us. And obviously that we (I) don’t become afraid and back out, because of the risk that it will put on my wife and myself financially. Seriously pray for us.

This will be my first biblically based degree. I’m a student developed through the church and because of that and reading a ton, I have a pretty good framework for the Bible. But I want to become stronger in this area and ultimately by going further in my education, I feel that it will benefit our family in the long run.

So do you have any advice for someone going after an M. Div or just someone going back to school after not having been in a long time.
