Recruiting the Best Volunteers for Ministry
Business handshake, originally uploaded by janotto1979.
Look recruiting people will always be a part of your role in ministry. I plan to try out some strategies in the next few weeks on recruiting. Because let’s face it, your preteen ministry doesn’t run without incredible leaders. So we always need to be on top of our game to recruit and equip these incredible people.
But first of all, here is my number one tip. You should be praying for and about your leaders and prospective leaders all the time. It should be a non-negotiable part of everything you do. I believe that God sets up appointments for us and when we are in the mindset of looking for leaders, then I believe we are more prepared to recruit them.
I’m so incredibly excited for the direction our ministry is taking. I can’t wait to tell you some more about those things.
But what are some questions that you have about recruiting? What has helped you in the past, or what is one thing you wish you knew more about recruiting leaders?
And for some past tips on recruiting be sure to check out these posts:
Revolutionary Parenting Giveaway Winner
So I ran a contest a week ago that was going to giveaway the book Revolutionary Parenting. So I went to random.org and using their list generator put in the 3 names that entered the contest and here are the results:
So Karen shoot me an email with your snail mail and the book will be in the mail. Thanks so much for entering everyone. Pretty good odds of winning if I do say so myself. Make sure you subscribe and keep up with everything on jcisonline.com
I’m sure there will be many more giveaways in the future.
Nook for Kids and Teaching Preteens to read the Bible
Nook for Kids is coming soon to Barnes and Noble. From the video, it seems to have a ton of potential if leveraged in the right way. It totally got me to thinking:
How are we leveraging technology to teach kids and preteens how to read the Bible?
It is a necessary part of the Christian life. Reading the Bible is incredibly important. Finding new ways for kids and preteens to engage with scripture should be something that is on the mind of every Children’s Pastor and Preteen Pastor. Watching the video and the interactivity designed with each read. I could imagine books of the Bible with the same interactivity programmed into it. Imagine Noah’s Ark and being able to usher in the animals or seeing the Walls of Jericho fall after you push the people around the walls.
What do you think? Is this just a pendulum swing and eventually these media will fizzle out? Or is this something we should be paying more attention to.
Weekend Update 10/24/10
Sunday morning is happier with a good cup of coffee, originally uploaded by emil2099.
- Crazy Awesome Day at Switch today. So excited to see what God is going to do through these students this Christmas season.
- So much more to tell about the above line, but it must wait…for now
- Going through my first Audiobook, The Power of a Whisper: Hearing God, Having the Guts to Respond
. It’s weird, think I’m more of a reading/writing preference learner.
- Reading through Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity
again, The Power of a Whisper
, The Me I Want to Be
, Doctrine: What Christians Should Believe (RE: Lit)
, and really want to start Finally Alive by John Piper
. But it’s too much already.
- Praying for Wisdom and Guidance in a few areas of my life. Would love for some prayers as well from you guys.
- Really want one of these for myself. Would love to use it to study!
- Been using Things for Mac. Way more productive right now. Any tips or tricks?
- Downloaded YouLead from Orange, really excited about it.
How was your weekend?
Some of my #Fails in Preteen Ministry
So it’s pretty easy to celebrate the wins sometime but I’ve got some big fails that have happened since we started Switch as well.
- I am awful at scheduling volunteers. It’s a new thing for me, but I feel like this is the biggest fail for me so far. I don’t like any of the systems set up to schedule volunteers and I haven’t picked one. That ends next week.
- Events. I figured by this time I would have at least three events planned throughout the year. That hasn’t happened. Camp, Milestone Events, and just some plain ol’ fun stuff needs to be planned.
- Job Description stuff. I don’t want regular job descriptions. I want some like Granger has for their Communications team. So I began writing some witty and fun to read descriptions.
- Time and Productivity. Still not where I want to be here on a personal level.
- Boys’ small group. I had a really rough time last night. It’s normal for this age group to have spectacular group one week and then not so much the next. It’s tough on my psyche to be honest. Our boys in-home group can’t seem to get off the ground either. Girl’s are a raving success and growing. Boys not so much right now. Never thought that would be the case. Any help for preteen boys small group would be ridiculously awesome right now.
I’m sure there are more. I don’t ever want this blog to be a place where I’m not authentic. It’s why I started blogging. It’s not enough for bloggers, pastors, business folks to only celebrate the wins in a public domain. I hope that these fails that I’ve had in some way encouraged you that Jesus is not done with you in any way. He wants you to know Him more and struggles are one of the best ways to do that. Because generally in struggles, desperation isn’t as hard to come up with
Random Thoughts
- Sometimes I wonder how often leadership is a drag rather than a thrill.
- Waiting for the long term is ok as long as the short term isn’t being sacrificed.
- I wonder how many incredible ways have yet to be discovered on connecting with parents
- Writing job descriptions for Preteen Ministry leaders. This is going to be fun.
- I’m re-reading Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity
by David Allen. Greatest Productivity book ever. Seriously
- Have so many books to read on my list that I’m feeling a little overwhelmed. Anything that you’ve read in the last 6 months that you would read again today if you could?
- Really pumped about Switch, but also incredibly excited about Family Ministry at Brookwood Church.
Preteen Ministry: Outside the Box
Address Book Brown Fern pattern, originally uploaded by moonbindery.
I’m so incredibly excited about our Switch Groups that are taking place throughout the week. I truly believe that small groups are where kids, students, and adults begin to see tremendous growth. This is my highest priority: to get students involved in groups that are filled with students their age and adults that are going to invest in them.
One of the keys to promoting this growth and love for the gospel of Christ is the connection that we make with our students outside of the box of Sunday morning. How can we attend award shows, art exhibits, school lunches, baseball games, plays, soccer matches, etc? When we show up students have this message pressed into their hearts, “They REALLY care about me.” It’s when this message is on the hearts of our students that they really begin to tune into what we are saying.
They don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care. So dust off your datebook and contact list and start planning some events outside the box of Sundays.
Besides casual conversations, what are some ways that you figure out what your students are involved in?

“It occurred to me that since the invocation of Twitter, nobody who has participated in it has created any lasting art.”
Crazy! This is what he said after he announced he was quitting twitter.
“Those who decide to remain offline will make better work than those online. Why? Because great ideas have to gather. They have to pass the test of withstanding thirteen different moods, four different months and sixty different edits. Anything less is day trading. You can either get a bunch of mentions now or change someone’s life next year.”
What do you think? Agree or disagree.
Definitely made me think
