Permission to Speak Freely by Anne Jackson review

This is a review for Permission to Speak Freely by Anne Jackson.

So I love reading different things. Anne Jackson is an author that I just can’t get enough of. She writes in a way that draws me into the story. I read this book in two days. I couldn’t put it down. I absolutely love the way that she crafts stories. I tracked on her blog when she asked the question:

“What is the one thing you feel you can’t say in church?”

I grew up in church. I love the church. But, I had some things that I always wanted to say as a teenager. I had some stuff that I still want to say today. But honestly I feel like I can’t. Especially in a world of limited accountability like an online space, where people say things just to get noticed, not really to see change happen.

But Anne pursued this further than asking the question. She sought to tell her story of how the church caused her some pain and some hurt. I think we can all agree with her on that point. The depth of my pain isn’t comparable to Anne’s or most, but I do deal with some of those hurts everyday. The lack of diversity, the lack of compassion, the lack of commitment are all things that I saw growing up in the church and I really became disheartened by as a high school student.

My thoughts: it’s gritty, it’s real, it is a bit rough. But it’s needed. The thought that I continue to think about is how the church moved from a place of sanctuary for people that could find pardon for their sin towards a place where people don’t feel accepted or loved and instead feel judged and unwelcome because of their lifestyle.

Lifestyles haven’t changed all that much in my opinion but the way that we react and act towards others has changed. You can place blame wherever you like, what you can’t do is read this book and not take responsibility. It will cause you to look inside at the hurt and find healing and it will also cause you to look (if you work at a church like me) at how you are contributing or working to change the feeling that others associate with the church.

Great, Great book. Loved it.

Frustrated

You know in my life, this is something that I battle so often. I battle frustration. Frustration with my accomplishments or lack thereof, frustration with my attitudes, and frustration of just not being “Where I should be”

It doesn’t get easier is the advice that I’ve heard the last few weeks. That’s true.

My life has always been about a plan to get things done. My plan has changed multiple times. When i met my beautiful wife, when God told me to move to SC, when I started working at Brookwood and again since I’ve moved into the position of 5th and 6th grade director.

I love what I do. But some times it’s just frustrating missing the bigger picture. It’s my own attitude and desires that get in the way so often. But then I read verses like this and it comforts me:

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 (NLT)

God transform me. You have so far and I pray that you continue to do so. For those reading this today, I pray that they begin to let go of their life and hand it to you and just be open to your guidance. Lord change us, lead us, and use us.

The Gap between Kidmin and Jr. High part 1

Now I’ve been working on this stuff for awhile. I really hope this helps someone out there. I want to take a few blog posts to really point out some of the things that we looked at when we started Switch, our 5th and 6th grade ministry here at Brookwood Church. I’ll call it Gap Analysis, if you will. The reality is that there are huge gaps that exist between these two ministries. And those gaps effect both kids and parents. I think if you really took the time to analyze some of the gaps between your ministries that are in sequential order, then I think it might bring collaboration to a new level and a level of continuity to families for the long haul. Had to steal it Sam ;)

Here’s our goal: to reduce the gap and figure out a way to either bridge it or provide some stepping stones for families to take smaller leaps rather than a big one.

There are a few gaps that really stood out in our context. So now for the first gap: Small Groups

Kidmin Breakdown

Kids are checked into small groups. The small group leader is usually the second or third person that the kid sees. They also are dropped off by their parents and so the small group leaders also have interactions with parents as well. Then after about 5 minutes past the beginning of service time the kids are called into large group service. Large Group lasts around 30 minutes and then kids are dismissed back to their small group classrooms. Activities and discussion happen until kids are picked up by their parents from their classroom.

Jr. High Breakdown

We have a student building on campus called the South Campus or SoCam by the students. Kids are usually dropped off in the parking lot and are checked in at a desk we have at the front. Then they are free to hang (play ping pong, video games, foosball, eat at the cafe, or just chill) until the service begins. After about a 45 minute service they are broken down into small groups and then discussion happens. Then they are let go from small groups and they chill again until their parents arrive in their car to pick them up.

So after the Breakdown you can see the very different setup of our two programs. Both are very effective by the way. But different. So looking at the graphic above there are really three things that we saw as different. Time-Place-When small group happens. Those three things are the big gaps. For us the two that are the biggest priority are time and place. These will provide kids the stepping stones that we need, God willing, in order to transition them from Kidmin to Jr. High successfully.

What we do:

Just a quick breakdown of where we are at now in Switch, at least for now.

  • 10-15 minutes of Small Group at least.
  • Looking at doing a small group rewind (recap of series) with more time for small group.
  • Girls small group in rooms. Boys in Large Group.
  • We have chill time in large group beginning and end like Jr. High
  • We do small groups midweek and are really pushing for kids to get involved here. They happen in homes an at church on Wednesdays.

Small groups to me are the fabric of growth and connection. They are a must have not a secondary inclusion. But we, those in preteen ministry, must begin to look at how we can help prepare families for the next stage of our ministry, but not overwhelm them with such huge amounts of change.

More to come.

Any thoughts?

iStand-A POS solution for iPad

Brilliant piece of design and this can take the idea of an iPad being used for your ministry much, much closer to application. Self-Service Kiosks, Gaming Stations, Presentation Stands, etc. Comes with a dock and in varied colors on request. I think it simply looks beautiful. Check it out and let me know what you think. Great Weekend and Funny Pictures

wifey and me

So yeah, we had an incredible weekend spending time with friends and one another. It was so much fun and just the boost I needed. We headed to Pearson Falls after some other plans fell through. It was awesome. If only my wife knew the joy that she brings to my life. It’s super unbelievable.

So the story behind the picture, is this: I wanted a killer picture of my wife and I in front of the falls. This kid was walking through and it just made me think of how funny it is when you just want things to be perfect and they just…aren’t. Beautiful scenery, beautiful wife, random kid with the jersey of a guy that doesn’t even play for that team anymore.

Eventually we got a great picture from another camera. But sometimes we can get caught up in what went wrong and miss the rights. Like my wife’s smile and the fun that we had.

We are so fortunate to be where God has us in life. Sometimes I forget it. This weekend I didn’t. I’m thankful that God has chosen me to be a part of what He is doing in the lives of young people at Brookwood Church

I know it’s time for football, but…

2010 Memphis BasketballSo I know it’s time for football. But I saw this cover today and let me just say that I totally agree. After so many crazy things happening to our school some our own fault, others not so much. I’m so dang ready to cheer my school on to another successful year of basketball. I know it’s football and I’m definitely reppin my Tigers in football (although I’m sure we’ll be awful) and the Gamecocks (my wife’s team, I’m just ready to put the ball in the bucket! I just have one thing to say:

Memphis is back baby!

I can’t wait til Basketball Season!

But for the rest of you out there…

Who you reppin this year in football?
