Family Ministry Milestones

Cute Kid, originally uploaded by Joe Lencioni.

So I was asked to do a little post on milestones and kids. Generally the Milestones that we associate with kidmin are:

  • Dedication
  • Salvation/Baptism
  • Preparation for the teen years

I know the last one is fringe probably between kids and students. But we’ll just put it on our list :)

I’d really like to focus on a specific aspect of the milestone for this post. You see milestones are generally used to provide reference points along the journey. They are should be viewed in a way that allows families to say, “Ok we’re on the right track”. They provide focus and guidance for parents. But honestly, I also think they can be tough to understand. If we see them a reference points then they hold the correct place in the realm of a child’s life. However, when they are skewed as goals or items on a checklist then the results could be ineffective.

The purpose of milestones is to give people a picture of the long term, the overall life experience of a child rather than isolated singular events. Why is this small thought important?

From Dedication forward parents begin to put pressure on themselves to perform well as parental units. By casting the vision of a journey rather than getting to salvation/baptism or to the teen years without error, we hope to see parents take some pressure off themselves and their kids. Not only that but provide proper opportunities for kids to question and grow in their view of God and Christ.

Over the next few posts I’ll talk about how I feel about the milestones mentioned above and also a couple more thoughts.

Faceoff Friday: Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi

Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi, originally uploaded by Si1very.

Simple explanation. Vote in the comment section below. Give reasons why and we’ll tally over the weekend.

Coca-Cola or Pepsi? And let’s take stable of drinks vs. stable of drinks:

Coca-Cola- Coke, diet coke, coke zero, sprite, barq’s root beer, fanta, fresca, mr. pibb, vault, dasani, vitamin water, minute maid, hi-c, powerade, nestea, etc.

Pepsi-Pepsi, diet pepsi, mt. dew, sierra mist, mug root beer, dole fruit drinks, sobe, tropicana, amp, aquafina, propel, gatorade, starbucks drinks, etc.

Which wins in your opinion?

Digital Kids

Young Photographer at Work, originally uploaded by inkswamp.

In a couple of weeks we will be having our annual Children’s Ministry Summit for our Volunteers. This year our staff will be teaching breakouts for our Volunteers to choose from. I am doing a breakout on “Communicating with Digital Kids”. I’m pretty pumped about it.

Here is something I ran across as I was doing some research thought you might find it interesting…

Summarizing the real digital divide…
1. Native learners prefer receiving info quickly from multiple multimedia sources while many teachers prefer slow and controlled release of info from limited sources.
2. Native learners prefer parallel processing and multi-tasking while many
teachers prefer singular processing and single/limited-tasking.
3. Native learners prefer processing pictures, sounds and video before text while many teachers prefer to provide text before pictures, sounds and video.
4. Native learners prefer random access to hyperlinked multimedia information while many teachers prefer to provide information linearly, logically and sequentially
5. Native learners prefer to interact/network simultaneously with many others
6. Many teachers prefer students to work independently rather than network and interact.
7. Native learners prefer to learn “just-in-time” while many teachers prefer to teach “just-in-case” (it’s on the exam).
8. Native learners prefer instant gratification and instant rewards while many
teachers prefer deferred gratification and deferred rewards.
9. Native learners prefer learning that is relevant, instantly useful and fun while many teachers prefer to teach to the curriculum guide and standardized
tests.
This isn’t a matter of who’s right or wrong It’s not a matter of either/or. This isn’t a matter of them or us. It’s not a matter
of which way is better. The bottom line is that kids ARE different. They communicate differently than we do. They’re motivated by different things than we are. They process information differently than we do. And most importantly, they learn differently than we do.

So what do you think? Anything you want to know about digital kids?

Lunchtime

Today most of the Children’s ministry staff ate at Silver Bay. It’s a seafood restaurant in Mauldin, SC.
The food is usually very good and its always a fun time. Well today we went and the food was taking a bit longer than usual to come out. So our server, she was very good by the way, decided she would give us some complimentary things.

I say things only because I do not know what they were. The best way to describe this dish is to take a potato, slice it in four equal wedge pieces, and then sprinkle on some salt and pepper to decorate. They cooked them and put them on my plate. I love meat and grilling so food is kinda a big deal. This dish, thoroughly confused me. I am completely confused by this interesting dish. Add a sauce or a story or a reason why this was made and I will understand but I was completely befuddled as to what in the heck was going on in the cook’s mind.

No I am not a salesman for Dasani

I just posted the picture to take up space until I get some pictures onto my new macbook for the blog. Also it is kind of a joke geared towards my friend Josh Martin.

I think he will understand the joke but I know my man Steve Murphy will. Anyway still looking for a new identity for the blog. I would like it to relate to children if at all possible. So give me some ideas. I’m not really trying to brand myself but I am also thinking about naming it J.C. Thompson as well for id purposes. Anyway tell me what you think. No idea is stupid.

Macbook is here… Praise God

This may sound dumb to some of you, but I am so relieved that my computer is in my hands. I have been waiting to experiment and create with my own toy for about 3.5 weeks now. It is unreal how awesome this machine is and I hope that I will be able to tap into its potential.

P.S. If anyone from Apple reads my blog… Please Please get a store in Greenville, SC. You will have about 25 faithful customers right from the get go.

We choked

sad day and its funny I guess now I am getting bigger in the blog world because random strangers are posting comments that they are glad that the “thugs” didn’t win. Well I guess that is still our image even though we punished one of our players for the final four our back up pg no less. But I guess for those BCS programs they would have done it after the season but thumbs up to Cal on that decision.

If you went to the school you would know that they are different but that is where the judgements come from. Anyway we were 15 seconds away from a championship. I imagine it will be a long time before we get a chance like that again.
