Bible Reading Plans

antique bible 2, originally uploaded by Shannta.

I hope that you had an incredible new year. 2010 is going to be incredible for sure and to get you started on the right foot, I’d like to point you to a resource from Lifechurch.

Lifechurch.tv started a site called youversion.com for this reason:

YouVersion represents a new frontier in LifeChurch.tv’s efforts. We aren’t just building a tool to impact the world using innovative technology, more importantly, we are engaging people into relationships with God as they discover the relevance the Bible has for their lives.

And they have a new resource on their site for those that want to soak in some more of God’s word. They have a list of Reading Plans that vary by length of time and content and are a great place to start 2010!

Check them out and let them know exactly how much you appreciate by being engaged more in God’s word than ever before.

Primal by Mark Batterson

1001591_bPrimal, great book. It’s about getting back to the core of Christianity. And it does that. It’s challenging, stretching, and it pushes you to action. I’m definitely a fan of the way Mark Batterson deals with these two issues specifically: Scripture and Worship. I love how he challenges us to get back to the basics of Scripture and pushes you to redefine worship in your own life.

Plus there is the way in which Batterson writes his books. The way that he uses science, art, travel, philosophy, and religion to illustrate the complexity of God’s creation and dare I say “wonderment” of God. He pushes you to think. It’s frightening how many things, most see as mundane, Batterson can totally reform to illustrate the complexity and awe inspiring glory of God.

Here’s a quote that I would love to share with you that gives you a glimpse of the goodness that is Primal:

“For the record, there are approximately two thousand thunderstorms somewhere on planet Earth at any given time. And there are approximately one hundred lightning strikes per second, or 8.64 million lightning strikes per day! That is a lot of standing ovations. But according to the psalmist, the angels shout, “Encore!” after each one.

When was the last time you cried or clapped for the Creator? When was the last time you gave Him a standing ovation? When was the last time you thanked God for a baby’s smile or a child’s laugh or a spouse’s touch? When was the last time you were so awed by the night sky or autumn leaves or snowcapped mountains or ocean waves that you worshiped the Creator in wide-eyed wonder like a little child?”

If you are trying to get back to that place where you felt most primitive, and yet alive in your relationship with God, then Primal is the book for you. Hats off to Batterson for another challenging and inspiring read.

Kid Devotions

Deep Thought, originally uploaded by rohicks.

So for the last three months, I’ve been writing… Alot. We’ve really been trying to push to write devotions relevant to kids that there parents can guide them through. We’re hoping these would help parents begin to start a conversation on spiritual issues.

I just wanted to share a few things that I try and include in every devotional that I write.

1) Relevance

This is always where I start. The Bible is always relevant so I try and find an issue to talk about that kids are dealing with. You can actually find a list in most Study Bibles. Issues like anger, peer pressure, trying to fit in, etc. Then I try and imagine that issue in our context and write based on that.

2) Application

This is difficult but I always try and push the family, kid or even parent to an action. We can’t just be hearers, we must do. Application is key in these devotions because they give kids something tangible to do.

3) Promote Discussion

Does that mean that I have questions at the end of each devotion? No. But it does mean that you should find something that will cause discussion. Maybe ask them to think about a funny story or their favorite color, anything to get parents to have a conversation with their child. Let’s start with that and then move them to the Spiritual.

4) Prayer

Getting them to pray together. It’s profound having a conversation with God together as a family. It really is cool to see everyone being honest and I hope that the families that use these devotions would get to experience that. I try to give them a guide, also trying to promote discussion, even if it’s just in their heart.

E-Reader

I have seriously been thinking about buying a digital reader. It seems a bit weird to me though. I’m not gonna lie, in this area of my life, I am pretty hesitant about being ahead of the curve on technology.

I mean I love books. I love the smell, the feel of the pages, and the feeling you have when you see exactly how much you have read by the size of the wad of paper on the left side of your thumb.

But knowing that I will probably make the switch sooner rather than later, here is a write-up that might help you make a decision.

Comparison of Nook & Kindle

Takeaways: Love the lend a book, like the added bonus of offers for being in a barnes and noble bookstore, and love the ability to add storage space.

Can’t you see my bookshelf of memory cards full of books stored on them? 8)

You can make a difference…now

Watch CBS News Videos Online

Watch this. Unbelievable story. Incredible effort by this school.

Maybe someone can use this…

I know I don’t post alot of my production stuff, but I thought this might help someone. The following video is week 1 of a set of 8 week Basketball Devotions for 1st and 2nd graders. We had a volunteer draw some pictures of key parts of the story. I scanned those pictures in and used some simple keyframe animations to help “illustrate” the story. I used Motion 3 for this project but the keyframes could have been done in another video editing program just as easy. Anyway, this was a year ago and gives you a great alternative to professional illustrations!

Gotta check this out!

So u know me. I love to point you all elsewhere. Sorta backwards for a blogger. Anyway this person’s name is Michael Foster and his company is Salty Graphic Studio. He is a super animator and does alot of Children’s Ministry geared stuff.

If he’s not on your radar, you’re making a mistake. Check out what he just dropped on the world!!!

Greatest Message I’ve Ever Heard…Literally

brookwood-post-2

So I literally never do this. I don’t usually pimp out Brookwood Church stuff. I think there are a ton of resources out there including ours and I just don’t pimp our stuff. I try and give you overviews and strategies that we use in hopes that you will consider ideas and come up with your own.

This is Different!

I heard the greatest message I have ever heard in my entire life. This message is for everyone except kids but especially parents. I will tell you this, it’s heavy. There will be emotions that this message will evoke that you might not have known are there. It’s beneficial for you to talk about these things.

I never, never, ever, ever do this. This message is that important. You need to watch or listen to it. It’s about an hour, it’s worth it.

Yes I am crazy enough to think that I just told you to watch or listen to a message that is about an hour and you will watch it because I’m sounding crazy.

Greatest message ever.

Youtube for kids

Just did a little checking of some old bookmarks I kept. Here is one that I never got around to posting about. CNN had a piece on Designing and Internet for Kids. Thought it was a pretty cool read. You can read it here. But I wanted to highlight the site they posted.

ZuiTube

ZuiTube provides a kid friendly and kid appropriate place for your kids to browse online. So basically a safe “Youtube for kids” even though I know that most kids can are already keen on the interface for Youtube, this is a safe place.

Learn More

The site is ad free because of the parent browser platform that is called KidZui. If you are a parent and are looking for a browser that is safe for your kids, then this might be for you. Internet is a wonderful, wonderful place but full of craziness. Don’t be naive, take action and be proactive to keep your kids from alot of junk.

Book Review-Simple Life

Simple Life Blog Piece, originally uploaded by jcisonline.

Well I’m excited and nervous about my first book review. Why? Well I know that it took alot of work to write a book, just like it takes alot of work to write a good blog piece. But in all of these reviews I plan to be honest and forthcoming in my critique.

Anyway let’s get started. I was originally drawn to this book because of my experience with Simple Church. Great book for me mainly because I was trying to figure out some basic church philosophies and methodology on ministry. It was written by Thom Rainer who is also co-author of Simple Life. So that is why I was interested in this title.

Over 1,000 people surveyed confirmed that their lives are really stressful and lack focus. The Rainers intend to give insight on how simplifying your life can lead to joy and meaning. This book lays out a plan for simplicity in people’s lives.. Why simplicity? Well because we get bogged down by things that aren’t necessarily what we would call priorities. They show you four areas to key in on: Time, Relationships, Money, & God. Then for each area they guide you through a process consisting of four steps.

  • Clarity-defining a goal
  • Movement-doing something about it
  • Alignment-making sure what you are doing is matching up
  • Focus-final push to move from bogged down busyness to a renewed Spiritual walk.

My Thoughts:

Practical Plan with Effective Guidance

They give you a simple plan. They give you encouragement to get it done. Effective and short. May a little more detail but I believe they accomplished their purpose.

Spiritual Perspective

It’s nice to hear how to focus your daily tasks on life changing behaviors. I think they do a great job by showing the need to focus on the things that matter most. Our relationship with God, family, and other people.

Geared Towards an Older Crowd

I thought that providing everyone with a plan for creating a more meaningful, goal oriented push in their daily lives is an encouraging thing. I quickly realized however that this book seemed to be geared toward a bit of an older crowd. I don’t have kids, a house, or overwhelming amounts of extracurricular activities so later in life this book could have a more meaningful place. But for now alot of the situations didn’t apply to me.

Commercials

Don’t get me wrong I don’t have a problem with an author pushing their other resources, however, a break would be nice. It was a little bit uninspiring to hear about the Love Dare and Facing the Giants so much.

Lack of Statistical Analysis

Now forgive me because I am a stats guy personally so the lack of statistical analysis is something that I really missed. However, most people as they clearly state in the book probably aren’t interested.

Overall an ok book. Again alot of the stuff I felt didn’t really apply to me and my current life situation, however stuff to remain in my mind when the time comes. It you’ve got kids and you just feel like a plate spinner hoping it doesn’t come crashing down, then this is a must read for you.

For more info on Simple Life, check out Thom Rainer’s site or pick up the book on Amazon.
